The following changes are made to your calendar of events:

The Pet Blessing is PENDING. It will not occur on May 22 as planned. Stay tuned.

The Jesus 2.1 study scheduled to begin in March has been rescheduled to follow the conclusion of the Metaphysics II class on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m.

A Bishop John Shelby Spong study will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19 with his book: A New Christianity for a New World.

Choir practice will resume in March on the second Sunday of each month following the worship celebration.

Unity Cinemas are on hold until further notice.

Peace Making Workshop

Several members are studying Gary Simmons’ book The I of the Storm in preparation for the two-day workshop this month by LUT Chere Pinkston in the South Central Region of Unity Churches. Rev. Joy is facilitating the study. Although the text is wonderful preparation, it is not required to attend the workshop.

BLACKEYED PEA TRADITION
Come Sunday, January 2 to enjoy the annual black-eyed pea and cornbread tradition. This festive occasion will remind you of your childhood “back home.” There will be plenty of food including tasty desserts. Start the year off right with peas.

GOD BOX
On the first Sunday we will write out our intentions for 2011, seal them in a self-addressed envelope and place it in the God Box. During the week of Christmas in July these will be mailed to you for a review of your attainment status.

BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
You are invited to bring a friend to the Celebration Service on Sunday, January 16.

WORLD RELIGION DAY
Volunteers are need for the Unity booth at the annual World Religion Day at the Highland Center on Sunday, January 23 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets for one-hour blocks of service are available on the table in the lobby. See Dr. Roy Phillips for question or concerns.

JANUARY OUTREACH
Attention Ladies: You are requested to begin purging your closets for unwanted work attire. Bring your items on hangers to church on Sunday, January 30. The clothing will be donated to the Dress for Success program for those seeking employment.

ENLIGHTENED LEADERS
Churches across the Unity community are participating in a study of nonviolent communication…A Language of Life. Unity of Shreveport will also participate. Therefore, leaders and other interested individuals are invited to share in an eight-week one hour study following the Sunday Celebration service beginning January 9. At the conclusion of the study, a Licensed Unity Teacher from the South Central Unity Churches Association will lead the group in a very meaningful workshop. The basic textbook for the study is “The I of the Storm (Embracing conflict, creating peace)” by Dr. Gary Simmons. You are requested to give prayerful consideration to this timely study.

What a joyous time of the year! The spirit of Christmas it in the air! We can see it in the faces of children and they stand in joyful anticipation. We can hear it in the voices of adults as they speak more kindly. Our hearts appear to burst forth with songs of peace.

The message of Christmas is “the good news of great joy to all people.” It is a time to celebrate the awakened Christ consciousness in each of us. In his book, A Metaphysical Interpretation of the Christmas Story, Rev. Ed Townley shares that

Metaphysically what we celebrate each Christmas is…the birth of Christ awareness. What Jesus brought to us was a spark of new light, new possibility --- light that shines through the darkness of human confusion and illuminates the spiritual truth of who we are.

Christmas is a time of giving. We cannot give without receiving or receive without giving. Both giving and receiving are contained in one action; they are the two ends of the same process, like the very breath we give and receive.

You are requested to remember your church with a special gift this season. Charles Fillmore reminds us to “Give in a spirit of love and give when you cannot see any possibility of return. Put real substance into your gift by giving the substance of the heart with the token of money…the spiritual minded person does not make selfish use of the law but gives because he loves to give…and his return is all the more certain.” (PROSPERITY, p. 143, 144, 153)

My heart overflows with the joy of being of service to God in this ministry. I send you heartfelt love andpeace and joy. Glory to God in the highest, for the Christ is born anew in us today!

October Book Fair

The Facilities Ministry Team is holding a book fair at the church Saturday, October 23 from 9:00 am until Noon. Proceeds are dedicated to the new church building fund.

Take a look at those wonderful and uplifting books on your shelves. Select those that you think others would enjoy and drop them off at the church the week before October 23 (there is no storage at the Stoner Ave facility so please do not bring or drop off books before Monday, October 18.) And, of course, be there October 23 to buy some "new" books to replace them!

Melissa Freeman and Saci Roy are heading up the event and it should be a lot of fun. Imagine all the treasures you may find that Saturday morning...

7th Anniversary

This year it was a family affair - vocalist Claudia Walker sang twice while sister Sharron Jarmon spoke of "A Woman's Perogative" - a reference to the many choices in life made by their mother - Rev. Joy Walker.

Kingston Road Property Dedicated!

Sunday May 23 was a sunny day with a light breeze and plenty of shade on the Unity Church subdivision between Kingston Road and the South Shreveport Metro Park as Rev. Joy Walker led a dedication ceremony. An inaugural picnic followed as well as a good time by all!

Darren Bramley (with assistance from Rita and Blake) has posted the Kingston Road banner on the Kingston Road side and Park side of the property. The May 23 Service, Picnic, and Frolic will take place on the West side of the property adjacent to the City Park (park at the baseball fields.) A large canopy will be set up on the site (right.) A brief meditation will be held at the church on Stoner, then folks will caravan to the property for a dedication service and picnic. Bring your lawn chair! Directions from 670 Stoner: Turn right (west) on Stoner and continue to I-49. Take I-49 South (no choice there!) and exit Bert Kouns - turn right. Continue on Bert Kouns until cross Kingston Road - keep going and on the right is the entrance to the park (very evident). Turn into the park and continue to the right to the baseball fields. Park and take the walking path to the festivities.

Saints Win Superbowl! Church buys land!

Board of Trustees President Dr. Roy Phillips signs the dotted line! Authorized by the membership, the church closed on the purchase of two acres of land on Kingston road just north of Bert Kouns, Monday, February 8, 2010. Board member Dianne Gatschenberger witnessed the event.

The purchase concludes Phase One. Phase Two theme is move from "Temporary Location" of Unity Church to "Temporary Building" on church property. A walk around is tentatively scheduled for February 28 following the church service (weather permitting.)

The new year gets underway with gusto! On Saturday, January 2, the Abraham-Hicks discussion of The Vortex meets at 2:00 pm.

The annual New Year's luncheon follows the January 3 Sunday Service.

Meeting for the first time Tuesday, January 5, is the monthly Prayer Service. This service will occur on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm.

Unity's Spiritual Cinema resumes Saturday, January 16, 2:00 pm with What the *bleep* Do We Know?

And, keeping with the 2010 Theme: Thriving in Unity, Rev. Joy Walker will conduct a hands-on prosperity class based on Eric Butterworth's book Spiritual Economics. Rev. Joy Walker has returned from her sojourn down under, fully refreshed, inspired and prepped to begin a new decade. 2010 promises to be an exiciting year for Unity Church of Shreveport. We expect to close on the purchase of land in Shreveport for the future church facility. We expect a greater offering of classes and community based events at the current temporary facility. What a wonderful time it is!

Phase ONE

Sunday, October 28, 2009, the membership met in special session to authorize the Board of Trustees to negotiate and purchase a two acre parcel of land on Kingston Road (just north of Bert Kouns). The decision was unanimous. Board President Roy Phillips concluded negotiations and the contract was signed by all parties. Pending due diligence and closing, Unity Church of Shreveport has a location for the new facility.

Phase TWO begins - attracting the funds to develop the plans for the facility.

It can be done. The membership proved that 10-28-09.

Homecoming!

Sunday, September 20 is the Annual HOMECOMING Service and luncheon. It's a time for those many friends and members who haven't been to a service or class for a while to come visit and see what's happening with Unity in Shreveport.

Unity Church in Shreveport is one of the oldest continuing Unity Churches in the United States and is a part of the world-wide movement of Unity. Preliminary actions are underway regarding the purchase of property to build a new Unity Church for the 21st century.

The Saturday Unity Cinema is a hit as is the weekly Master Mind group and the 9:30 am Adult Sunday Class. The Uniteens are growing and becoming more active.

Animal Parade at the Gingerbread House

Dr. Claude Eggertsen and Jim Whidden delivered to the Gingerbread House the cuddly stuffed animals that sat in the sanctuary for much of the year. Unity Church friends and members donated the new critters to the Bossier/Caddo Children's Advocacy Center to be given to the children served there. Gingerbread staff (left to right) Sarah B. Jose, Bonnie Howell, and Aelania A. Whitehorn mingled with the furry herd. To insure compatability, new forensic interviewer Sarah Jose interviews one of the beasties.

Special July 19 Service and Workshop

Nancy Koran burst onto the tennis scene at age 11 and quickly rose to prominence competing nationally as the state of Maryland’s top player. She spent four years on the varsity tennis team at Ohio State University. After graduating from Ohio State she joined the women’s professional tennis circuit. After playing professionally on the tour, Nancy decided her destiny was to help others enjoy the sport and teach them how to transfer the lessons learned on the court to everyday life. She was a (PTR) certified tennis pro and taught students from all over the East Coast, ranging from the Hamptons in New York, to Palm Beach, Florida.

Today Nancy continues to impact the lives of people off the tennis court. She is an author and a motivational speaker. Through her training as a certified Life Coach and a Neuro-Linguistic Practitioner she helps people to transform their lives from ordinary to extraordinary. Easter Special!

A special preview of April's Unity Cinema selection, Forgiveness, will be made following the Easter service April 12.

The film examines the role forgiveness can play in alleviating anger and grief, as well as the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that come with forgiveness. It combines character-driven stories about the most dramatic transgressions imaginable with other stories that feel more familiar, more understandable to the viewer. The POWER of FORGIVENESS won Best Film award at the Sun Valley Film Festival.

The movie will be repeated at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 18.

Sunday School Pizza Party!

First Saturday Discussions begin in February 2009

Saturday, February 7 will begin a monthly series of discussion meetings on the Jerry & Esther Hicks book Ask and It Is Given. The discussion group meets from 2:00 - 3:00 pm on the first Saturday of each month. The Abraham-Hicks lectures, books, CD's DVD's and periodicals are focused on the Law of Attraction.

The discussion group is open to everyone.

A memorial service for friends and family was held at Unity Church, Saturday, November 29 for Elizabeth, who made her transition Novemer 21, 2008. She began this incarnation May 8, 1935. Elizabeth dedicated 52 years to education as a teacher and counselor with emphasis in Special Education. She is survived by her daughters Alicia Guidry and Dniel Guidry, two brothers, Earl k. Valentine and Dr. Jimmie L. Valentine. Rev. Joy Walker officiated the occassion.

Rev. Joy Walker will conduct six workshops based on Deepak Chopra’s book “The Third Jesus” beginning November 5. Workshops are each Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Open to the public at no charge.

Chopra poses that there is not one Jesus, but three. There is the historical Jesus, the man who lived two thousand years ago whose teachings became what is considered Christianity. There is Jesus, Son of God, a figure that embodies institutional religion, a priesthood and believers. The third Jesus is a cosmic Christ consciousness, spiritual guide for humanity.

either lost or have never known. That is itself a stunning concept, but Deepak Chopra is a stunning man. He explores what he calls the “Christ Consciousness” which can be identified neither with the Jesus of history nor with the Jesus of the creeds, the doctrines and the dogmas of ecclesiastical I nstitution. The popular Beckwith, notable in “The Secret”, on Oprah and Larry King, has developed an audio course Life Visioning: A Four-Stage Evolutionary Journey to Live as Divine Love.” Unity Church of Shreveport will be presenting the course during July. The workshop will take place every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm.

June 1, 2008 began with the 11:00 am Sunday Service with guest speaker Rev. Kent Lederer from Lansing, Michigan. Dianne Gatschenber hosted a luncheon for the congregation at her house after the service. Then, at 3:00 pm all gathered, along with several visitors, for the Ordination Service. Rev. Joy Walker was ordained. Participating in the joyful event were special guests Thelma Fennoy, Giles Rusk, Linda Hughes, Rev. Sandra Benson, Susan Caldwell, and John Mitchell.

Sunday January 20 was a special day begining with the Sunday Service with guest speaker Rev. Christopher Chenoweth. Following the service was the Advanced Prosperity seminar by Chenoweth. Unity folks from around the Ark-La-Tex came to learn the essentials of creating a prosperity consciousness. "Be your prayer," noted Chenoweth as a way to build consciousness. As a jovial illustration one attendee won the "door prize" of having the consciousness of John D. Rockefeller put in her head, thus assuring that she would establish herself in as grand a manner of the tycoon. A "middle class" consciousness, he noted, finds a person laid off from his/her job but within a year or so being back in a similar status. It's the consciousness, not the material, that creates.

It's not a secret, of course, the Law of Attraction. Like gravity, it just is and it works whether we are aware of it or not. Thus began the first of three workshops on the subject by Rev. Joy Walker. The dinner optional gathering on November 29 was interesting and leaving participants with a desire for more. The next workshop is December 6, 7:00 pm at the Broadmoor Branch of Shreve Memorial Library.

music on November 4. Lyn is a massage therapist in Marshall, Texas and sings in the Trinity Episcopal Church choir. She's active in community theater musicals & loves to sing out - especially when visiting Unity Church of Shreveport.

By the time most folks began arriving at 1:00 guest chef Catherine Derrow had cooked up the fish, the fries, and the hushpuppies. Host Percy Johnson once again opened up Johnson's Fishing Camp on Cross Lake for the annual Fish Fry. Billie Jones brought the spaghetti, Rev. Joy cole slaw, and a bounty of sides came from others. Will and Ines Lancaster provided the annual Bocci Ball.

So it begins! The sale of the 721 College property provides the resources to leverage property for a new church building. The Board of Trustees is scouting for such a location. If you know of a property that would be great, please let the Board know.
